Hello Everyone,

February seems to have arrived quickly. We’ve been blessed with a mild winter in NH, so far. It would be great for it to continue and to have an early spring.

February 4th is the date to make your annual feng shui adjustments in your home. Chinese New Year, the celebration of the spring festival, is February 8th.

February is also an excellent month to take action this year. February 10th is a particularly favorable day in astrology circles, so take meaningful action then.

Also, enjoy Valentine’s Day on Sunday the 14th and Leap Day on Monday, February 29th.

Leap Day is our way of keeping the calendar aligned with the seasons, as the earth revolves around the sun. It has been around since Julius Caesar implemented the Julian Calendar in 45 B.C. If we didn’t have a leap day, we would lose six hours every year and after 100 years, our calendars would be out of sync with the seasons by 24 days.

Enjoy February!

Two Chinese New Year’s?
Each year there is a Chinese solar new year and lunar new year.

February 4th is the solar New Year. This is a fixed date and it is the day to make annual shifts and adjustments in your home.

The Lunar New Year is a movable date. It falls on the second new moon after winter solstice. This is what we know as “Chinese New Year.” This is the day of the festivities and celebrations. This year it falls on Monday, February 8th.

The Chinese calendar runs in 60 year cycles. Twelve zodiac animals combine with the Five Elements to comprise the various energies for the 60-year cycle. Thus, each animal is further defined as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Doing the math, 12 x 5 = 60. An additional qualifier for the energy of the year is whether or not the animal energy is yin (quiet, passive) or yang (active, dynamic).

2016 is the year of the Yang Fire Monkey. It is an active, dynamic energy. We last experienced a Yang Fire Monkey year in 1956. Thus, everyone turning 60 this year was born in the last Fire Monkey year.

2016: Year of the
Yang Fire Monkey
The Monkey is a “Metal” animal with water and earth attributes. Monkey qualities include intelligence, curiosity, diplomacy, negotiation, competiveness, being clever, innovative, strong planners, thinkers, quick reactors. Monkeys can succeed in any profession. On the downside, Monkey energy can be mettlesome, opportunistic, manipulative and tricky. The Fire element adds illumination, excitement, warmth, light and joy.

We last experienced the energies represented this year 60 years ago, in 1956. Perhaps this year we will experience innovative breakthroughs via diplomacy to some of the larger issues facing the world. Some sources say a maverick is likely to be elected President. Will it be someone with maverick energy or an outsider? With so much at stake, 2016 is bound to be a fascinating year. The Fire Monkey energy can be very supportive in many areas.

The Monkey is compatible with the Dragon and Rat. It clashes with the Tiger. People born in Tiger years may have more challenges in 2016.

February 8th
New Moon in Aquarius
The February 8th new moon (also Chinese “New Year”) falls in the sign of Aquarius. It is associated with the Helpful People and Travel gua of your home and office.

We have an opportunity to invite and recognize helpful people into our lives by giving focused attention to the front right areas of our spaces. Helpful people can be family and friends as well as business associates and professionals. Helpful people can also be unseen spirits, helpers and guides, you name it. This is a month to set your intentions, take inspired action, get out of your own way, and allow things to unfold in magical and unexpected ways. Focus on solutions (your desired result) rather than problems.

New moons are about getting new things started and Aquarian moons are periods when group project, ideas and goals come to the forefront. They are ideal cycles to:

1.    focus on goals and plan ahead
2.    identify new ways of doing things
3.    attend to community and humanitarian needs.

The first week of February is an ideal time to clean, clear and re-energize your “Helpful People and Travel” gua. This is the front right area of your space when you are facing in from the main entrance or door to your house, any room in your house, business or property. This area is about the right people coming to assist you at the right time. If you have any travel plans or dreams, this is a great place to energize them as well.

The Helpful People area of your space is energized by the Metal element. Metal is represented by metal itself (gold, silver, brass, aluminum, etc.,) as well as the colors white and gray, circular and oval shapes, petroleum and things made from petroleum (plastics) and substances dug from deep within the ground (gemstones, big rocks and boulders). As an “organizing” element, Metal traits include clarity, precision, organization, order and focus. When Metal is balanced, you can easily sort information and experiences into patterns, solve puzzles, and bring order through rules and guidelines. You are more likely to have clear thoughts, be focused and communicate effectively. When Metal is deficient you may feel unprotected, find it hard to focus, have little or no routine, and lack a sense of purpose. Excess Metal manifests as criticism and judgments, perfectionism, obsessive compulsive behavior, as well as sarcasm, aloofness and indifference.

The organs associated with Metal are the lung, large intestine, and your skin. Metal out of balance may leave you feeling anxious, anguished, and in tears. If you are experiencing anxiety or anguish, or you have any difficulty with breathing, intestinal issues, skin conditions or rashes, balancing your Helpful People gua may strengthen your emotional and physical health.

Set your intentions this month and give special attention to the Helpful People gua of your home and business, as well as all right front corners of your space. Then tune into the February 22nd full moon to see how your intentions are beginning to take shape and unfold.

2016 Key Adjustments
The Flying Stars influence the energy in your house. The Annual Lo Shu number is the annual star that “flies in” every February. The number for 2016 is 2. Thus “2” is in the middle of the Lo Shu or Magic Square for the year. This number and positioning is used for both Flying Star systems as well as Nine Star Ki astrology. The number two star is also known as the “star of illness.” Balancing the energy in the Center of your home is very important this year.

Pay particular attention to the Center, SW, SE, and NE sectors.

1)    The Annual 5 Star is in the NE sector

2)    The Grand Duke is in the SW (232.50 – 247.50)

3)    The Three Killings is primarily in the South sector

4)    The # 2 Star associated with illness is in the Center

Prior to placing my cures and doing annual adjustments, I gather all cures from the previous year. I toss out the salt water cures and any bagua mirrors that I used. Then I salt my remaining cures and place them under the full moon overnight or in direct sunlight for at least four hours. Items that I typically cleanse and re-energize are my crystals, 6 coins, any indoor wind chimes, 6 coins, gourds and/or wu lou, statues ( Buddha, Kuan Yin), etc.

Each year I place a “Salt Water cure” in the sectors with the #2 and #5 stars, in addition to the center of my house. For 2016, sectors 2 and 5 are in the Center and NE, respectively.

For 2016, add lots of metal to the Center of your home and eliminate as much red as you can. Otherwise, keep the center of your house relatively quiet. Also balance the #3 star of Arguments in the NW and the #7 star associated with robbery that is located in the North.

Here are two links for annual changes related to the Flying Star system of Feng Shui: Elliot Tanzer and The Feng Shui Store.

If you are looking to replace some cures and/or add in some new ones, I recommend checking out the products at: Feng Shui Shopper and the Feng Shui Emporium (Lucky Cat)

Overall, I recommend keeping your cures and adjustments simple. A few go a long way, particularly when they are placed with intention.  Each year, I cleanse my cures in the first few days or February and place my annual adjustments on February 4th. Then reenergize them once or twice during the year. Contact me if you would like a customized update for your space or my 2016 annual summary.

Enhancements for Romance
February 14th is Valentine’s Day. To strengthen your home or bedroom for romance, begin by removing clutter, anything broken or needing repair, piles of items that have been sitting around or accumulating low energy, stacks of clothes, books and magazines, paper piles, anything that you do not love or do not use. These types of things deplete energy. They draw it down and drain it. Remove all low energy items before adding enhancements. When you enhance an area that contains clutter or low energy, you are activating the situation (blockages and stuck energy) you most likely want to change.

Once you have thinned things out, go ahead and add items that support partnership and romance. To attract a partner, hanging a picture of two people or two animals or a pair of something meaningful can be very effective. Be sure that the people or animals are coming together vs. moving away from each other. If you have one or more single photos or items, add a partner. Pair your art or single item with something meaningful or symbolic, that you really love.

Red, or any shade in the red family, is usually a great enhancement for romance. Mandarin ducks are a classic cure. Rose quartz and/or amethyst crystals are also a nice enhancement.

The most important step to take is to set a clear intention for what you really desire. Manifestations are happening fast these days. Pay attention to your feelings, words and actions. Many times people are actually energizing what they do not want, without even realizing it. A big clue are the words “don’t” and “not.” If these are a part of your daily vocabulary, consciously let them go.

Three quick steps for manifesting your perfect partner or relationship:

1.    Tune in and become very clear about what you really want.
2.    Remove clutter and stuck energy.
3.    Add a nice enhancement or reminder of your intention.

Remember: less is actually more and “the work” is always on oneself. What steps will you take to experience the shifts you would like in your life?

1000 Books Before Kindergarten!

A recent article in my local paper caught my attention about an important initiative underway for families of young children: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.

The idea is for parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books aloud to each child from birth through age five. This is roughly four books per week. It can be one book 1,000 times, 1,000 different books, or somewhere in between.

“Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood. The brain develops more rapidly during the first three years of a child’s life than at any other time during the lifespan. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most important, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.”

This is good old-fashioned reading. The type of reading that also develops relationships and nurturing experiences, and social skills. It might also help kids to slow down and to develop stillness. These are skills that are not acquired digitally via electronic screens, computer games, or even electronic learn to read programs.

This information also correlates with increasing information about the dangers of over-exposing children to electronics, digital devices, white screens, etc. before they learn to think logically. Sue Palmer, a UK educator and speaker, recently wrote:  “I’m now convinced that, unless we remove those interactive whiteboards from nurseries and infant classrooms and convince parents to limit screen time for the under sevens, we’ll create a generation of children many of whom cannot control their conscious thought processes, express their ideas in clear logical language, or follow reasoned argument.”

If you are looking for something fun to do, check out the Ice Castles at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH. It’s a fun way to enjoy the beauty of winter. These are manmade ice formations with a variety of caves and tunnels to explore, along with a slide.

My husband and I visited over the weekend. If you go, dress warm and wear boots with rugged bottoms, as the snow in parts can be several inches deep. You’ll see the best colors if you go after dark. We were there at dusk. Even though we were a bit early, we still saw plenty of color.
